From mastering the delicate brushstrokes to capturing the intricate details of couture fashion, you will gain invaluable techniques and insights that will enhance your artistic abilities. 

During the workshop, you will delve into various watercolour techniques, such as layering, blending, and colour mixing, to add depth and dimension to your fashion portraits. You’ll also learn how to infuse your artwork with the vibrant energy and sophistication found within Vogue’s glossy pages.

What you will learn  

  • Proportions, spacing and structure of the face 
  • Techniques such as wet on wet, wet on dry, soft and hard edges, controlling the brush 
  • Underpainting to create depth 
  • Building colour to create shape and definition 
  • Techniques to articulate fabric and pattern 
  • Creating shadows 
  • Using metallic paints to create highlights 

This workshop is suitable for all abilities, no experience is needed. All materials will be provided along with access to the museum’s collection of Vogue magazines dating from 1988 to 2013. 

About the tutor

Martine Spencer is a professional watercolour artist, textile designer and digital illustrator specialising in fashion and beauty. Educated in London, Martine works out of her studio creating designs for her range of cards, textile designs, art prints murals and more. She draws her inspiration from street style and fashion magazines and has developed her own techniques when creating portraits that produce loose yet dynamic paintings. She loves sharing her skills through teaching and exhibition her work across the UK.
