  • Fabric Painting with Sarah Campbell – Stencils

Explore fabric painting using stencilling techniques under the guidance of legendary textile designer Sarah Campbell in this 1-day workshop.

Participants will have the opportunity to create a variety of effects and patterns using different stencils hand cut from traditional linseed card, freezer paper, tapes and even newspaper. During the workshop participants will build up their own sampler of techniques while considering positive and negative space and experimenting with composition and colour. With these new skills participants will move on to creating their own pattern on a length of calico or linen, perfect for any number of future uses. Each stencilling technique will be demonstrated by Sarah, who will be sharing her expertise, gained over the course of her 55-year career in textile design.

This workshop is suitable for beginners or for those who have undertaken Sarah’s Fabric Painting Introduction Workshop.

About the tutor

Sarah Campbell is an internationally acclaimed textile designer who, together with her late sister Susan Collier (1938 -2011) founded and ran a groundbreaking and renowned design partnership, creating iconic fabrics for the industry’s greatest names for more than 55 years. Her own work span reaches from Liberty in the late ’60s through to Anthropologie in 2023, to LF Markey in 2024, to constantly expanding ranges for Museums & Galleries and Stringberry and many customers and destinations in between. Love of pattern and colour and an inventive freshness are her hallmarks. She now works on her own – making, teaching, writing, and continuing to paint designs on paper and directly onto cloth for both commercial production and to special commission. The mark of the hand remains her principal currency. She is the author of the recently published Hand-Painted Textiles, a Practical Guide to the Art of Painting on Fabric, 2023 and co-author, with Emma Shackleton, of The Collier Campbell Archive, fifty years of passion in pattern (2012). There are two further publications – Dailies and The Art of Pattern.
