Shedding the Shackles offers a fascinating glimpse into women’s craft enterprises and the positive impact their individual projects have on providing a sustainable lifestyle. Throughout the book, Lynne Stein tells the stories of twelve women’s craft initiatives, with an emphasis upon age-old matriarchal traditions and techniques, indigenous materials, and the positive impact their projects have on the route to breaking the poverty cycle and addressing gender inequality.

Lynne began the evening with a brief introduction and a look inside her studio, exploring her tools, techniques and examples of her work. Next, Lynne shared some fascinating extracts from her book, before moving to a slideshow presentation, to discuss the context of her own practice and her motivations as a writer.

Finally, there was an opportunity to ask questions, to discover more about Lynne, her work and her experiences of celebrating the artisanal excellence of women in craft. Lynne also presented a selection of the objects featured in Shedding the Shackles, while revealing their stories.

This is a recording of the online event, Shedding the Shackles: Women’s Empowerment Through Craft, which originally took place on Thursday 5 August 2021 via Microsoft Teams.
