Join artist-embroiderer Lynn Setterington as she shares some of her pivotal textile projects which feature in her new book Connecting Threads. Each project acts as a social history document, providing tactile evidence of often untold stories of people on the margins, unexamined histories and overlooked places, all through stitch.
Ranging from tiny colourful hand embroidered fragments recording everyday life, to monumental, site-specific banners made with construction workers in the north of England, Lynn’s work is both personal and political. Hear how an artist-embroiderer works and thinks creatively, how projects are managed and take shape and some of the hurdles encountered in socially engaged practice.
This illustrated talk will take place against the backdrop of Lynn’s display in the Museum’s Fashion Studio. The work on show challenges contemporary issues in society and how stitch can be used to commemorate people and communities.
