Join writer Esther Zuckerman in conversation with head of exhibitions, Dennis Nothdruft as they discuss some of the most glamorous, radical and scandalous moments in Oscars fashion history. This online talk takes its lead from Esther’s most recent publication, Beyond the Best Dressed, which features twenty-five key Academy Award outfits and spans over ninety years of Oscars red carpet looks.

From Mary Pickford to Bjork, Esther and Dennis will highlight some of the historic choices featured in the book, that have made the headlines and discuss how these looks created cultural waves and their lasting legacy today. They will be taking a close-up look at the show-stopping, Elie Saab gown worn by Halle Berry for her historic best actress award win. Dennis will share the secrets of the dresses’ construction while they discuss the significance of what this dress now represents. 

The talk will be accompanied by some of the beautiful illustrations created for the book by artist Montana Forbes.

About the speakers

Esther Zuckerman is an entertainment journalist and the author of Afield Guide to Internet Boyfriends. Her work has been published by Thrillist, Entertainment Weekly, Vanity Fair, Refinery 29, and The A.V Club, amongst others.

Dennis Nothdruft is Head of Exhibitions at the Fashion and Textile Museum. He has led the exhibitions team at the Museum since it was founded by Zandra Rhodes in 2003 and previously spent many years working as a design assistant in Zandra Rhodes studios in both San Diego and London. He has lectured widely on many aspects of fashion and textiles and has authored several books including Zandra Rhodes: 50 Fabulous Years in Fashion, How to Draw like a Fashion Designer, How to Draw Vintage Fashion and Kaffe Fassett: The Artist’s Eye.
