Ideal for creating fashion flats, repeat patterns and vectorising complex designs. Adobe Illustrator has a vast range of tools that are perfect for fashion and textile designers. This 3-day Saturday course will teach you how Illustrator is used in the Fashion and Textile industries to create effective designs and patterns, and creative ways to present your ideas. An expert tutor teaches practical skills and hints and tips.

The course covers the following main topics:

  • Fashion Flats construction
  • How to master the Pen Tool to create any intricate shape
  • How to create repeat patterns (block, drop repeat)
  • How to recolour repeat patterns designs
  • How to use the Live trace tool to vectorise intricate designs

This course is suitable for beginners, as a refresher or for those that have a basic knowledge of Illustrator. The content is ideal for people working in the fashion and/or textiles sector, students, tutors or anyone interested in improving their computer design skills and learning techniques in Illustrator. Participants are required to have basic computer skills.

Essential information

  • Please set up a file storage account with Dropbox on which to save your work or bring your login details if you already have one. For security reasons, USB sticks and external devices cannot connect to our computer network and will not work.
  • You will need an Adobe ID. Please set this up before the course starts at adobe.com/uk and select ‘Get an Adobe ID’. Make a note of your ID and password and bring them with you. If you already have an Adobe ID, please check if your ID still works. You do not need to subscribe to the software as it is free to use when studying at the Museum.
  • Please bring a notebook and pen.

Our short courses are a great value way to learn essential design software. This course is taught in the Museum’s IT suite using the latest Adobe Creative Suite software on newly installed PCs and 24” 4K Ultra HD monitors. Led by our team of highly experienced tutors, tuition is in small groups with a focus on your particular learning requirements. The Fashion and Textile Museum is part of Newham College London.

About the tutor

David Wright has worked for the Fashion and Textile Museum for over ten years. He uses creative software such as Illustrator and Photoshop for the design of repeat patterns for textiles and other products. David is particularly keen on using Illustrator for the design of geometric patterns and has created several techniques that can quickly build complex geometric designs.
